Introducing a new project I'm working on I'm calling "Splinter". This board design represents many of my preferred keyboard design elements. I wanted a board that had a Minivan layout, was split for more comfortable hand placement, had additional nav columns with rotary encoder support for utility, with exploded 3u / 1.75u spacebars for ergonomics, and a chunky case.

The board design is currently being developed, prototyped, and tested. As of July 2024 I have 3DP prototype in hand. I want to ensure the mounting system and typing feel are right before running a group buy. The final touches of a weight engraving design and pcb screen print design are also ongoing.

I'm estimating finalizing these by the end of Q3 and likely running a 3DP group buy in Q4 2024 with a premium Aluminum and Sandblasted Brass run to follow in 2025.

I wanted the basis of this layout to be a Minivan, but needed a split board to be a little more ergonomic with hand placement. The extra keys of the nav columns that can also be rotary encoders is nice to have a little extra flexiblity. The rotary encoders don't get in the way of typing as thy're always outside the main part of the layout. Three left mods for me is always nice to have, with what I do I always seem to want 3. The dedicated arrow cluster is also nice to have, arrows on a layer always work but sometimes you just want dedicated arrows. The extra 1.5u key over there is a nice utility key. The spacebars I wanted to be 2x 3u and I wanted them to be placed in a way that is optimal for thumb position. They're nicely centered on where your thumb should naturally fall and not placed just where they fit on the bottom row like non-split layouts. Also allowed for 1.75u / 1.25u option in case that's your jam.
